Gun nails come in various shank types, diameters, lengths, and galvanizing. The following glossary has been created to help you select the proper fastener for your application.
Length:
The term "penny" is often used in describing the length of a nail. The term "penny" is believed to have come from how many pence it took to buy 100 nails in medieval England. For example 100 3-1/2" (16d) nails would cost 16 pence. 100 2" (6d) nails would cost 6 pence. The letter “d”, which means penny, stands for the Latin name given to Roman Coins, Denarius.
The gun nail business have made a few changes to this concept. Below is a list of common terms for gun nail sizes and types.
- 6d Box: 2" x .113" Shank
- 8d Cooler: 2-3/8" x .113" Shank
- 8d Common: 2-1/2" x .131" Shank
- 10d Box: 3" x .131" Shank
- 10d Short Common: 2-1/8", 2-1/4", or 2-3/8" x .148" Shank
- 10d Common: 3" x .148" Shank
- 12d Box or 16d Short: 3-1/4" x .131" Shank
- 12d Common: 3-1/4" x .148" Shank
- 16d Common: 3-1/2" x .162" Shank
Shank Types
- Smooth Shank: Usually vinyl coated providing some holding power
- Ring Shank (RS): Annular rings to give more holding power.
- Screw Shank (SC or DS): Screw shank or Drive Screw shank nails turn as it enters the wood creating greater holding power.
Type of Corrosion Resistance
Bright Basic: These nails are vinyl coated for better holding power but offer no corrosion resistance. This type of nail will rust or bleed almost immediately when it comes in contact with moisture.
Electro Galvanized (EG): Electroplated galvanized nails often are very shiny. The thin zinc coating is applied to the steel in an electrolytic solution. The coating of zinc is very thin. The corrosion resistance of these nails is minimal when exposed to weather or high acid woods like cedar or redwood. Additionally these nails are not approved to be used in ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quaternary) products.
Hot Dipped Galvanized (HDG):Hot Dipped Galvanized nails are a higher quality of galvanization. The steel nails are bathed in molten zinc. The zinc forms an alloy with the outer layer of the steel providing greater protection. This type of galvanizing is approved for use in ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quaternary) products or certain exterior applications depending on the area.
Stainless Steel (SS):The type 304 stainless steel nails are the most common type used in the nailing industry. They contain 18 percent chromium and 8 percent nickel. These nails provide maximum corrosion protection in almost all environments but can still be a problem in coastal areas over a long period of time.
